Audio Only - Seattle Area, Washington, 1960
This is the oldest known recording of Lowell Williams. It is a formal debate between Lowell and John Gibbs conducted on September 13th & 14th, 1960, regarding the existence or absence of Biblical authority to set up the organizational and financial structures used to support orphan homes and other benevolence institutions.
PROPOSITION: “According to the Scriptures, churches of Christ, each acting in it’s congregational capacity, are adequate to perform the work of benevolence that God has given the church to do and they should do this work without delegating it by the contributions of their funds to benevolent organizations.”

Please note that some recordings in the "Doctrinal Debates" section of this website were originally captured on reel-to-reel tape in the 1960s. Some of these debates were either poorly recorded in the first place or degraded over the decades before they were rescued for this website and thus may be quite difficult to understand. We apologize for the poor quality of those recordings, but their historical significance prompts us to include them here anyway.
